Spanking New Bourne Legacy Trailer

A brand new trailer for August’s The Bourne Legacy has been released and it gives a much longer and deeper look at the mess left behind by Mr Jason Bourne.

I am liking what I see. As a massive fan of the Bourne films I have been very very sceptical about this since it was announced but this trailer has temporarily overcome my brute cynicism.

We can see from the trailer (and previous trailers) that Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross, or Kenneth Gibson as he was previously named, underwent a training process very similar to that of Bourne. From this he has clearly acquired the same ingenuity and kickin’ the s*** out of people techniques that Bourne demonstrated so well. We also have Rachel Wiesz as a scientist named Marta thrown into the mix, and she appears to have done some tampering with Renner’s chromosomes to make him a better assassin.

The main event that causes Renner to run seems to a major clean up of anything to do with Treadstone and Bourne and this is all under the guidance of Edward Norton’s character Byer.

What I am really loving and was not expecting is how much this film is linked to the others. We have various returning characters and themes and lots of mentions of the infamous Jason Bourne name. The fact that Matt Damon was not even asked to appear in this film caused me to assume it would not be that heavily influenced by the great work done by Liman, Damon and Greengrass but this trailer has proven me dead wrong.

However, as my cynicism begins to take hold once more, I do worry that maybe it all looks too influenced and that perhaps it is all way too similar to be in any way interesting or exciting. Time will tell.
